Free Patriotic Crochet Patterns: Support Team USA!
Three cheers for the red, white and blue!
Here you will find free americana-style crochet patterns with a united states flag color theme to celebrate July 4th, the Olympics, or any patriotic holiday. A few months ago, I was looking for a USA themed pattern to make as a gift. There were many here and there, but I wished they were all in one place where I could visually compare them and easily refer back to them. So the RocketSquid Craft Challenge came along and Squidoo came to the rescue!
My Gramma taught me a few basic crochet stiches when I was young. I made lots of chains, which turned into bookmarks, Barbie scarves, and rope to tie up G.I. Joe :) Growing up, I dabbled in it now and then, strengthening my skills along the way. Now, I have picked up my crochet hooks yet again. Each time you review crochet it comes back to you much more quickly. Go ahead! Don't be afraid it's been too long. You'll be surprised how fast you remember. You're creation can bring you pride & satisfaction, and it could also bring joy to someone else. They make great gifts!
It's great to remember our veterans and soldiers on patriotic holidays, but let's appreciate their service all year long, by making special, patriotic keepsakes in their honor!
Now, what about you? - Are you a newbie, an old pro, or a dabbler like myself??
Do you crochet?
Let's start with HATS! - So many patterns, so little time!
Aren't these hats adorable? Perhaps a bit hot for summer, but it can get cool during evening fireworks shows and holiday camping. They would look terrific year round with a red or navy winter coat.
You can download these FREE earflap hat patterns from Micah Makes with instructions for different sizes.

What will YOU put on your hat?

To make this handsome potholder by Amelia Beebe AKA champygirl, you can download her FREE Americana Potholder Pattern.
You will need size F & D crochet hooks and
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn in off white, red and navy blue.
First crochet the red and white stripes, then add the blue panel.
Next, crochet 3 white stars with the size D hook, and sew them onto the blue panel.
Separately, crochet a second all blue square for the back of the potholder with the size F hook.
Crochet the two squares together around the edges, with blue yarn, while adding the hanger.
This ingenius one-piece, double-thick potholder pattern was written by Priscilla Hewitt. I'm told it's easy and quick, once you get the hang of it. It starts out simply enough, working in rounds from a foundation chain to form a pouch. Here is where it gets a little tricky and requires some out of the box thinking. There is an origami-type fold at the end, where you pull opposite blue sides toward each other, sew them together and push down to become the middle blue stripe. The other blue rounds become the corners. Clear as mud? Try reading the pattern for the FREE Fourth of July Potholder first. Then, if you think you need more direction, go visit LiLu Studios, where Lori makes a similar potholder and has more pictures of the steps.
You will need a size G crochet hook and red, white, and blue worsted weight COTTON yarn. Cotton is able to withstand very high heat and will not melt (but can burn!) Lori warns that Acrylic yarn melts when it touches very hot items from the oven, so it can't be trusted for potholder protection. She likes the thick, durable feel of Lily's Sugar'n Cream and their Peaches'n Cream yarns.

Crocheted can cozies anyone?
I do not use can cozies for three reasons:
#1. We don't drink sugary beverages.
#2. I can't imagine taking the time to find one and use it!
#3. I don't know anyone who uses these things!
Do YOU use a can cozy? Please tell me WHY!

U.S. Flag Code Debate - Custom or Code?
Should the flag image be used on crafts?
Yes, it is an expression of patriotism. A flag pattern is not an actual flag.
anonymous: Yes. It is an expression of our love for our country and those who are fighting for our freedoms.
amandascloset0: I see no problem with it, I believe it to show patriotism and pride in the principals our fathers have fought for.
